While I enjoyed using the different timelines to tell the story, the hidden symbolism used throughout the book just fell flat for me. By the end of the book, I just didn't care.

Did not like the writing. It’s so cliche when a character goes “No!” When something bad happens. Also, I’m not getting any emotion from Noemi after her boyfriend has been killed. She immediately goes into how they had a lot prepared for themselves but it just seemed unrealistic. It was a lot of telling and I’m not about to get into this book with that.

While I still haven't untangled what all was myth and what all was reality, I enjoyed the haunting in the background of this already difficult life of addiction and mental health issues. It's a good lens into the issues that often plague those relegated to reservations who have been stripped of all their heritage and resources.
