Fast read, but really interesting. I wonder how much is purely fact based, but not sure I'll commit yet to a biography of Caesar.
I DO think I'll read the rest of the series.

I was not happy with this book. It was good enough for me to continue the series, but books 2 & 3 were much worse. I will eventually read 4 & 5 for completionist value, but I'm not looking forward to them. While I don't mind stretching history a bit in historical fiction, I much prefer having something closer to actual history and branching off from there rather than completely changing history.

This book, in turns, interested, bored and thrilled me.
This is the first in a four book series on the life of Gaius Julius Caesar. It follows him from the carefree age of eight to the age of eighteen.
As has been mentioned in many reviews, there are several historical facts that were rearranged for the story. I personally didn’t find them distracting as I found the depiction of roman life more than made up for it. As Julius gets older and returns to the senate I am hoping for more about roman politics, I thought it extremely interesting. The thrilling parts all include war and/or warriors; I found them well written and enthralling. Now for the parts I found boring and the reasons for only a three star; the mystical little brown man, I don’t want my historical heroes to live because of something fantastical; Alexandria, does she really need such a big part; and the raven; was that scene truly required? That said the pros still outweigh the cons, I enjoyed the book and as I write this I am awaiting the arrival of book #2.

FANTASTIC historical fiction. There is some artistic license here but, if you are a fan of Ancient Rome, this is a must-read.
