I'm not into reading history in general but was given this set for Christmas by my husband who said I should read these. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and now looking forward to starting book 2 !

I read this when I first came out and remembered it fondly so when the whole series were on offer in a Kindle deal I snapped then up.
Reading it again, it's not as good as I recalled, but it is any entertaining enough yarn with all the right ingredients. Iggulden mixes a bit of history (I can't vouch for the accuracy) with a coming of age tale, plenty of action and a bit of humour and romance. It's satisfying but never amazing, although it does wrap up nicely ready for book 2.

This is a very well written and interesting account of Caesar's early life. Although much of it is fiction, it does give an accurate picture of what Rome was like during this time. I'm very glad to have won a copy of this book! Thanks!
This was a coming of age tale of the the young Caesar and Brutus.
The focus was almost entirely on bloodshed and battle. I had hoped for more exploration of the formation of a republic where a man was valued for who he was rather than than his bloodline. In some ways that was what I got, but I found that life had little value and was governed by the survival of the fittest. Women had no value.
There are so many aspects of roman society that were left unexplored in this book. Philosophy, architecture, politics, enineering, artisans etc. But maybe it was necessary for rule of sword to come first .
