The first quarter of the book, during the imagined life of Caesar's childhood, seems rather anachronistic and overtly coloured. Was quite a disappointing start. However, as the characters and story develop throughout the remainder of the book, they acquire depth and authenticity. Ultimately, it becomes a really entertaining narrative. It doesn't follow Caesar's rise to power religiously, but allows the reader to understand the political landscape and value system at the time, which ultimately propelled the young Caesar.
Starting this book was like diving in, head first, to a nice cool pool on a hot summer day. I felt like I was already drawn into the story and the two main characters, looking up to find I was only on page 7. The beginning of this book has been a real pleasure to read, especially surprising as it does not fall within my normal genre. Not only is the story moving along well enough to keep the pages turning, but the writing itself is practiced and professional, not the writing of an author's first book. I look forward to an exciting ending and more adventures as the series continues...
Unfortunately reading what I had written at the beginning of the book does not line up with my thoughts at the end. While it did start out at a high level for me, it seemed to have just stayed on that same level throughout. It was still pleasant to read, but while I read many books at once I found that it kept falling to the side of something that I would be more compelled to reach for. In the future I may give book2 a try, but that would be my hoping that the author improved from the first and gave more variation to the story.

Slightly slow paced in a few places but great historical fiction.
Wow this was awesome. Definitely had one or two cheesy moments, but it was such an entertaining story.
