This book was incredible, but gosh, was it painful. I think I underestimated how triggering and brutal certain parts of this book would be. It hurt so much to see everything Xie Lian went through, but I’m also glad he was able to pull through and become the kind and wonderful person he is. I can only hope that he gets the happy ending he deserves.

I have only felt this depressed one other time, and that was when I finished A Little Life. I don’t think I can physically write a review for this one.

Check out the trigger warnings if you ever wanna read this series…

The beginning of the book warmed me up for the chill I was going to experience reading arc 4. It was so painful, yet so good. Xie Lian is such a well written character. I’m curious when White  No-Face’s identity will be revealed.

i no joke cried the entirety of book 4 the first time i read it and i cried rereading it this time as well

this is just a heartbreaking read. with like no moments of happiness. while reading when you think things couldn’t possibly get worse it does.

something i noticed in reread
when i first read it i didn’t realize that hua cheng was forced to watch xie lian get stabbed. i just knew he saw what happened. anyways so that’s why in book 5 he’s freaks out at xie lian in the like weaponry room because he thinks xie lian will stab himself to get out

i think the thing that makes this specific book so sad is how like realistic it is. like take away the immortality and god stuff and it’s really a story of how intense poverty can complete change you as a person and how fragile the human will is.

anyways shout out to the hat man you’re a real one
