I have only felt this depressed one other time, and that was when I finished A Little Life. I don’t think I can physically write a review for this one.

Check out the trigger warnings if you ever wanna read this series…

The beginning of the book warmed me up for the chill I was going to experience reading arc 4. It was so painful, yet so good. Xie Lian is such a well written character. I’m curious when White  No-Face’s identity will be revealed.

{ in case anyone sees this, my actual review of this book is on the full, webnovel version }

for my own reference:
- after an avalanche, xie lian and hua cheng come across a cave of ten thousand gods
- xie lian reveals that he had always known that "nan feng" was actually feng xin and "fu yao" was actually mu qing
- mu qing and feng xin attempt to keep xie lian away from hua cheng after discovering this entire cave is filled with xie lian statues and that hua cheng was the small child during the shangyuan procession back in xianle
- CONFESSION SCENE!!! "'your highness... you really will... be the death of me.'"
- white no-face reappears and traps xie lian in the kiln, wanting xie lian to become a new calamity
- ALL OF ARC/BOOK 4: WHITE-CLOTHED CALAMITY!!!!!!!!!!!!
- mu qing leaves
- feng xin and xie lian begin to busk, but get into a turf war that leaves one man nearly crippled
- the king of xianle is revealed to be quite ill while the queen now delights in """cooking"""
- xie lian buys a bunch of ghost lanterns from a shady cultivator and puts them to rest... but one sticks around and prays never to rest
- xie lian resorts to trying to rob a man and is caught by some junior officials, but they promise to keep quiet
- when finally going to cultivate, xie lian finds a great spot that ends up also being found by ~33 heavenly officials. this all blows up when it's revealed that the news of xie lian resorting to robbing has spread throughout heaven and then mu qing - a lower court official once more - joins and is forced to get xie lian to leave
- xie lian starts seeing white no-face everywhere
- temple scene........................
- xie lian forces feng xin to leave
- xie lian's parents............. ruoye is 'born'...................
- xie lian vows to use the resentful and vengeful souls of xianle (soldiers and those who died from human face disease) to kill lang ying, king of yong'an
- xie lian gets a new assistant, wuming
- lang ying dies as he was already, willingly, infected with human face disease of his wife and child
- xie lian says in 3 days he will release the resentful xianle souls but first lays in a street with a sword through him
- at the last second, One Man gives xie lian his bamboo hat to shield him from the rain
- xie lian decides to not destroy all of yong'an but when he starts to take in all the souls, wuming instead does
- white no-face reveals that wuming had been his One Last Believer
- xie lian ascends again and asks jun wu to banish him
- he begins his common life and hopes 'we shall meet again' after seeing a small red flower on the side of the road
- end of arc/book 4!!!

Embarrassing! The love of Hua Cheng's life who is also in love with him finds out that Hua Cheng had a crush on him. I love that we finally get to a confession from these two and I am so excited to see where this goes from here. I didn't mind that most of this book is a flashback and that we don't get to see the resolution of the romantic confession, because the flashback is so rich in character development and in moving the rest of the plot along.
