I loved this! This is a book about everything. It's "creative nonfiction" that moves from memoir to journalism and is informed by women, theory, movies, everything. It's all the big brains of "litratshure" and none of the b.s. It's subjective and personal and all the more trustworthy for being honest. Good, great, fantastic. Such a welcome relief from grad school.
Beautiful, insanely crafted essays about race & culture & relationships.
And also an astonishingly well pulled-off comparison of Eminem and Sylvia Plath.

"But didn't that spoil love? To put one's body in it?"
I wish this book was five hundred pages longer. I wish I could read it on the train forever.

Good lord this book was a mindfuck in the best way possible. Challenging, lyrical and informative. Would highly recommend and look forward to rereading in the future.
i really wanted to like it a lot more. as enlightening as a couple of passages in a couple of essays in this book are, it is so so so unfocused. it doesn't read as a coherent collection. a few of the essays are downright boring / wastes of time. the richard pryor essay was wonderful. the opening essay was great. the writing is beautiful. but what were we really even examining across all of these essays? how far are we to stretch the definition of "white girl?"
