I can't remember anything about this book - which means I either didn't finish it or need to read it again...

This is marked as a Dirk Gently book, but it is mostly a collection of interviews and articles gathered after the author's death. It is well worth a read if you are an Adams (or Pratchett or Gaiman) fan but don't expect your standard novel with a beginning, middle and end.

How can I accurately review this book? Douglas Adams is responsible for my favorite series of all time, and he's probably my favorite author, but this is basically just a collection of loose notes and stories that are either clearly unfinished or were never meant to see the light of day. And you know what, it's brilliant.

I can only say that I wish this was longer. That Adams had lived long enough to finish it the way he intended.

I would recommend reading this book after reading all of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books and Dirk Gently.

Wonderfully written, per usual of Adams. The interviews let you feel like you know him, so much so that you want to write to him saying how much you enjoy his work. Then you get to the epilogue and remember he’s dead.

I am not sure what I expected from this. It was a collection of writings posthumously put together, including part of a Dirk Gently novel that Adams was working on. There were interviews, articles, essays, stories, jokes, and eulogies for this fantastically funny writer. Although I found the book to be uneven in the extreme, it did give me some new insights into who Adams was. I am not sure that is was a fitting last book, though.

This book is a collection of interviews with, articles by and story thoughts of Douglas Adams. The last part also includes a posthumous attempt at a draft of a novel Mr. Adams had been working on.

Perhaps if I had picked this up right after Mr. Adams died and I was also still a teenager, I might have enjoyed it. I loved the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy when I was a teen. I didn't so much go for the eventual Hollywood movie that was made. At the time, I attributed it to a poor screen implementation. Upon reading the draft novel in this book, I wonder if I have just changed to much (gotten older, wiser, dumber, erratic?) to appreciate Douglas Adam's rhetoric anymore.

Further, writers keep journals and notes, often to jog memories, write down ideas that came to them during the night/day, etc. I have kept several journals myself. However, these are internal ideas, and while fans might love to get their hands on them, they can't contribute to the larger dialogue between a writer and his/her audience. Writers craft, they don't just blurt out every thought (well, most don't). E.g., when you look at a beautiful piece of art or architecture, you don't see the sweat and tears, underlying supports, etc. You see the finished product. You know a lot went into it, but that's not the point, just the final product. That's my opinion, as a writer.
