I walked in with such high standards on this one and was instantly enchanted by the story and the language. The beauty seeped through the pages and the tale of a grandfathers love took over. But, as with so many novels I read these days, the ending felt too rushed, like a quick finisher on what could have been something more. I still loved this and I will keep thinking about the history and reality this addressed, but I wish there had been more and that I had gotten to understand the core and peripheral characters on an deeper level.

This book was slow-paced, but worth the read. It weaves together three different stories about one place in Australia. Two are Indigenous people, and one is a missionary who thinks he is there to do good. The three different stories give you a look at Indigenous life in Australia, which has the most endangered Indigenous languages in the world. When you read about what happened, you might think, "that's awful, but it happened over there." I can promise you that just as bad things happened to Indigenous and Black people in America.

Interesting as historical fiction, and a welcome departure from WWII, but I found it predictable and I skimmed through the last 20 pages. Had potential but just didn’t do it for me.

Decent read, and it went a lot faster than I anticipated. It was definitely eye opening for me, and the discussion and ideas raised in this book were interesting and challenging, so that’s always a win for me. The different parts of the book were confusing at first, but I enjoyed Albert’s dictionary words peppered throughout and the stories he had for each of them. All up a decent read.
