none of you will ever hear the end of me finishing this book
It was amazing and I want everyone to read it too, it’s the story of one girl’s search for a suitable boy ;) to marry in 1951-1952 India, but so much more than that … I love a long character driven book and I learned so much about post partition India- so much about the cultural reorganization between Muslims and Hindus- political violence, socialist efforts, unifying movements, yada yada. I really learned a lot. The level of detail in this book is astounding (it’s 1500 pages lmao) but you get so invested in the characters and the love stories, it almost felt like a screenplay sometimes. Also, many twist and turns :) It’s a fantastic book to commit to and be part of for a few months, it feels like it’ll never end but not because you’re bored or because it’s too long- because it becomes like another world you live in, like dreaming!

Mrs. Rupa Mehra is looking for a "suitable boy" for her daughter Leta, unfortunately they have a different ideas of what that means.
This book was ..... ok
Spoiler
I appreciate authors taking the road less traveled, not all stories have a happy ending but common.... after all that you can't just let Romeo and Juliet be together?I found this book to be like a baseball game.
Baseball can be described as 5 minutes of action .... 175 minutes of nothing.
This book was both engaging and boring, which I think most long books are-
Anna Karenina has pages and pages on farming
Moby Dick has pages and pages on fishing technique
A Suitable Boy has pages and pages of backstory that I could not keep straight, but I didn't need to because these people were NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN!
Sometimes I wonder if authors just WANT to write a long book, and just shove as much information in there as possible.
For me this book would have been much more enjoyable if it was shorter. Because it was so long, with many UN-engaging chunks, I found myself getting bored.
It was well written and the parts that were good, were great.
But there was a lot of dead space for me.

This book takes the readers to modern day India, where Lata's family struggles for her marriage partner. After about 1200 pages of judgment and deceiving, she chooses, and she's a better person because of it ... maybe.
It was disappointing. With a read this long, a reader should get more out of a story than a love triangle and a moral about lying. If it were a normal length, I would say it's not my cup of tea; but it has critical acclaim for its density.
