After reading the book, I feel kinda let down. They perceived the threat to be a lot scarier than it turned out to be. Throughout most of the book we got warnings of Caliane's power, how she's not even awake and she's already having scary ass influence on the weather, the archangels, earthquakes, etc. and then in the end... she wasn't the monster they anticipated after all.
This book revolved more on the dysfunctional relationship Raphael and Elena had with their own respective families. Families ... they can be a source of strength for us but they can also turn out to be our greatest weakness. I can understand Elena's feelings regarding her father, Beth, and her half-sisters. She can try to hate them for the hurt that they cause but she can't stop loving them, too.

This is one of those guilty pleasure books in that there isn’t a lot of plot or substance but it is still enjoyable to read and has amazing characters that you love. Much like the previous book in this series, archangel Lijuan is one of the enemies that Raphael and Elana have to watch their back against, but she is more elemental than physical now. Added to the mix is Raphaels mother who may be awakening from her long angelic rest that started over 500 years ago because she was going insane at the time.

Besides that, nothing much happens in this book except Elana and Raphael’s devotion and love for one another. I do love their banter and power plays so much. Their flying angelic romantic scene was top tier too. Love it.

Enjoyment - 2.5
This is why I can't read books by the same author back to back or too quickly after one another, I start to notice the repetitive parts of the series and it doesn't hit as well. This installment took me forever to get through, but I'd still like to continue with the series I just need some space from it for a bit.

After the battle with Lijuan that destroyed Beijing, now Raphael and Elena need to deal with a new threat. There are signs that an Ancient is waking up from their sleep, and Raphael fears it is his mother, Caliane. If so is the case, he might have to kill her. Moreover, Lijuan, still alive but evolved, doesn't want anybody to steal her seat as the most powerful, so Raphael will need to decide on whose side to fight for.
