The book is fantastic and I loved the plot. Multiple stories all heading towards each other in a perfect circle. The concept and rules of Hell in the novel are all done really well. Through the entire novel you are making discoveries and connections as a reader, so if you don’t like being confused and kept in suspense while reading it’s not for you.  Few reasons I’m not giving 5 stars is that the book is easily digestible, except for one plot point where the details are muddled. Since the book bounces around so much I think this plot point gets somewhat lost, so when I finished the novel I had to sit down and map it out.  Also, the dad has a very unsettling attraction to his daughters 14/15 year old friend and you hear about it a lot. I’m also unsure how I feel about the ending. Spoiler- it takes you literally right back to the beginning, like nothing happened and there was basically no growth from Peyote. Why do that to your reader? But overall for sure read this book.

for millennia, peyote "pey" trip has worked his way up through the levels of hell, and now he's on the fifth level, making deals and eagerly watching the harrison family -- if he can get a deal from one more of them, it'll make a "complete set" and he will be up for a long-awaited promotion. meanwhile, the harrisons are on their annual trip to their lake home in new hampshire, and this year they've brought their daughter mickey's charismatic new friend ruth along with them -- and ruth is going to change everything.

this was very fun. it started out rather silly as all the best depictions of hell do (i am thinking of you the good place) and also made me think a bit about hellhole by gina damico for no reason other than it also being a horror-comedy involving hell and demons. i enjoyed pey's storyline a lot. the harrisons' i liked a bit less because while it started good and ended EXCELLENT there was a lot of family drama and adultery in the middle which was a bit boring but OH HHHH (view spoiler) . i really enjoyed all of the end of the book . both storylines. i was a bit confused on what was going on with cal sometimes but that's ok. and i liked the silly worldbuilding of hell and i flew through this book, it was super engaging for the most part :)

Interesting concept, but not executed in the best way. Just too much going on, leaving the story feeling underdeveloped.

This concept had so much potential, but I found it a slog in reality. Most of the characters were unlikable, frankly. Silas had some weird pedophile traits weren't really necessary. The ending felt contrived. It would have helped if the storylines intertwined earlier - it really felt like two entirely parallel stories, and that made the bulk of the book feel confusing. I don't understand why Cal is present in this book, and her/the General's backstory was really unpleasant to read (and yet, also felt contrived.) Overall, not my favorite book, I'm sorry to say.
