I picked up this book because I was really intrigued by the premise. And it certainly was entertaining. It contained some of the most colorful characters I’ve ever read in a book and it followed two separate storylines, both of which I found interesting in their own ways.

I understand that this novel is a debut from this author. I think it’s an excellent start. I will certainly look for her next works after this roller coaster lol. I loved how she described her characters and settings. Everything was so vivid and directly clear. Even the action. There were some plot twists of course toward the end. And while they were clever they left me a little underwhelmed as I kind of predicted certain things that turned out to be as I predicted. Also, there’s a character that I’ve heard people say is irrelevant and didn’t enjoy but actually I found her to be quite entertaining and interesting as she provided a role of both foil and ally to the protagonist. No, she wasn’t the best character, but I honestly kind of enjoyed her.

Plus, the ending. I…don’t really know how to feel about the ending. I liked it, but it left me feeling a little….I don’t want to say “unfulfilled”, but it was depressing, if only in a questioning way. I don’t know, maybe I’ll understand and enjoy better on a reread, which I actually would love to do with this book at some point later.

Still, all that said, I’m giving it 4.5 stars. As I said the premise was intriguing, the characters and settings were very detailed, and the stories were actually very good. Claudia Lux is off to a good start. I do recommend this book. Go get it!

This was an interesting debut novel. I understand now when people say “it reads like a fast book.” Didn’t seem like 400 pages at all.

I liked back and forth POV between Peyote and the Harrison family. At points on Pey’s POV it was confusing for me to keep up but overall I liked it. The ending was ok but it left me with some questions.

I didn’t get the whole Mickey as the “Mark”, but it was Sailes that he needed to sign his soul.

2.5 It was 2 separate stories that only came together at the very very end. I felt like I had anticipated a bigger plot twist but overall the stories were decent
