A collection of short stories giving more detailed backstory to some of the players in Blackest Night. Most should be read before, but The Birth of Nekron should be read right before Blackest Night #6 and the Book of the Black should be read after you finish the whole Blackest Night series.
New Blood is a story about how Kilowog came to be the hard nosed drill sergeant Green Lantern fans love. It is in some ways a typical war story, but it provides great grounding for Kilowog. I liked the ending particularly. 4/5
Daddy's Girl is a cutesy story about Arisia waiting to become a Green Lantern. Given its brevity, it does make her look a bit callous, but I think that's just the time compression. SHe shows plenty of dedication and love to those around her. I wish it would have been a bit longer. 3/5
Fly Away is about the Red Lantern Bleez and it isn't very good. It tells of the spoiled princess she used to be about how she was made a slave by the Sinestro Corps. I just thought she was an annoying brat. 1.5/5
Blume Godhead is the Agent Orange story that is a nice little vignette about what people value. It is too short to offer much meaning on its own but does bring up some interesting thoughts afterward. 3.5/5
For Your Love is a darly comic tale about Mongul Jr. It shows his childhood admiration of his father and how his world was shaped. I thought it was pretty amusing. seeing his loathing for the Justice League and his warped sensibilities. 3.5/5
Saint Walker is the story of the eponymous Blue Lantern and how he got his power ring. It is a very interesting tale, similar to Job, though I think it adds some more human touches. With this it is easy to see how Walker become the powerhouse he is. 4/5
Tales Of The Indigo Tribe is a teaser for the Purple Lanterns and reveals little about them other than their language cannot be translated, their emotion is compassion, and they may be more powerful than the Blue Lanterns. I'm not going to rate it as it isn't a story really.
Lost Love is the story of why Carol Ferris became Star Sapphire again. It is mostly a short recap of the events in Green Lantern Secret Origin from Carol's point of view. The ultimate reason for her rejoining is very disappointing, but fitting I suppose. 2/5
The Birth Of Nekron is a lead in to Blackest Night #6 and details what the title says: how Nekron came to be. Well, sort-of. It gives a little description from a crazed psychopath. Not really sure why it's here. Its also so short and has so little story that I can't really rate it.
The Symbols Of The Spectrum is an interesting look at all the Lantern symbols and how they the designer made them. Worth a read.
The Book Of The Black is a more detailed backstory for Black Hand. It is an interesting insight into his mind, but can contain spoilers for the overall arc. It should probably be ready afterward. 3.5/5
He Primed Me is a meta story about Superboy Prime. It tries to be funny, but as it so rightly points out: Nobody cares about Superboy Prime. This story also gives us no reason to. 1/5
I enjoyed most of them and consider them a worthwhile read.

On and off I have been reading my way through the Blackest Night/Brightest Day series, and of the parts I have read, this is definitely one of the better ones.
Short pieces covering the origins of members of the different colored ring corps, this book does a good job of making the characters seem real and making them feel more fleshed out than is often the case in the other entries in the series.

This was largely an introduction to the different rings, with a few pages into the mind of Black Hand, and an introduction (for me) to Superboy-Prime. Not mad it, but not overly blown away either.
