This is a very queer graphic novel, although not necessarily in terms of explicit representation. While
Blackwell and Goldenloin are depicted as former lovers and implied to get back together at the end
, that’s all it really is: implied. I’d argue it’s more text than subtext, but it’s still subtle enough that I could see someone missing it.

Nimona though. That girl is queer as hell. I mean, really the whole comic is. But not in the “two people of the same gender kissed!” way. More so in the “Stevenson’s own queer identity was obviously integral to the development of the themes here and any interpretation of the story that didn’t take that into account would be deeply missing the point”. Also, Nimona herself changes into male forms and seems to identity with them. It’s queer. Plus the whole
monster
thing. Suuuuper fucking queer.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go reread the ending and think about
manifestations of abuse.

Nimona is a funny, but also heartbreaking story about a young person who never fit in because of her abilities. Also she is chaotic af and hilarious and I laughed so much. I also got some romantic tension between Ambrosius and Ballister lol. It's a heartfelt story and I love it.

I see the name Noelle Stevenson, and I'm like, "yes, please." This graphic novel has a murderous sidekick, an upstanding villain, and SCIENCE. It's the crossover between Megamind (hello, hilarious archnemeses) and She-Ra (I mean... it's Noelle Stevenson and it's cute and funny and perfect, as one would expect) that anyone could guess I'd be obsessed with. It's an effervescent adventure with the art and the story to make something great. The anachronistic combination of medieval armor and dragons thrown in with high rises and scary movie/board game/pizza nights only added to the weightless fun.

I don't mean to paint the story as mindless, however. There's real heart here. There are difficult moments alongside the lols. The relationships are poignant, earning my buy-in with a few well-placed vignettes. It's a masterful concoction of ingredients that I would recommend to anyone. Go grab a copy when you need a moment of pure, restorative joy.
