Until I read Heartstopper this year, I had never picked up a graphic novel before - it just didn’t seem like my thing. I LOVED Heartstopper, though, so I’m giving more a chance. Enter: Nimona.

This was a very cute story that tugged at my heart a bit more than I thought it would. I loved that it’s in full color and the art is beautiful. Nimona herself is quite funny, but I know I would be more of an exasperated Ballister Blackheart if I had to deal with her IRL. That said, I did feel like the story was longer than it needed to be. As I got to the end, I found myself not riveted by the action and reveals but, rather, getting kind of sleepy… Still, it is certainly worth the read.

I will also note that, since this is my year of reading only queer books, I was a little disappointed on that front. The queerness is implied, but not outright acknowledged. I hear the movie is much more gay, so I’m excited to watch it now.

Nimona is a fun fantasy comic read. The characters are quite good. The world is inventive and specific. The web comic strip origin is quite apparent. Some chapters feel too slight but then others feel loaded with twists and turns. I liked the story, I get the appeal. It felt a bit thin. At points it could have used further panels expanding on what certain characters were doing. I liked it. I wouldn’t say it’s my new favorite standalone comic but I’m glad I read it.

i have been a huge fan of ND for years and was happy to finally sit down and read the infamous NIMONA. this story was extremely unique and i couldn’t help but to love Nimona and Blackheart the most. it felt like some parts had been cut (from the original web comic) for space, but otherwise the pacing was on point and plot was very entertaining. i feel like if there had been more world-building up front (because the setting really is unexpected and unique) or if i had read this when it was a web comic, it would be a 5/5. but for now, it gets a 4!

This was such a great story! It had a fantastic plot premise and execution, and I loved the combination of medieval and futuristic elements it used for world building. It reminded me of the Astronights Island on Poptropica. The action sequence at the climax was simply incredible and completely engaging. I also loved the father-daughter relationship between Nimona and Ballister - Nimona herself made me laugh due to her bolshy personality. While it took some time for me to click with the art style, once I did I really enjoyed it. Finally, there was good character development for Ballister and Ambrosius, but I would have liked a slightly different ending to give Nimona more of an arc.
