the second half was much more interesting but not enough. I'm glad to see other people saying this was one of her weaker one's because otherwise OH BOYO am I regretting insisting on reading all her works

I am really not sure how I feel about this book. Do I love it? Do I hate it? There were times when I wanted to give up on it, and yet I couldn't. Somehow I kept finding myself still reading it. Maybe it was the fact that just like her main character, Rennie, I am trying to learn to live again.
As far as the plot goes. It was fairly simply and almost uneventful for the first half of the book. In the second part, the story makes a sudden turn and all hell breaks loose. I was, however, a little disappointed that there seemed to be a whole line of characters who appear out of nowhere and are simply dropped from the story leaving me to wonder what had happened to them.

Probably the least thematically cohesive or coherent Atwood book, which still doesn't make it bad, in the scheme of things.

The ending events came sort of abruptly and I'm not sure exactly how they all came to be, but I'm blaming that on me reading the first half of the book 2 weeks before reading that second half.

Not my favourite of Atwoods.

I felt the political landscape on St Antoine isn't outline enough. This could have been intentional but it just lost me a bit.

I found myself more interested in Rennies past than in her present.

It's not my favorite Atwood book, but it is in no way a bad book. The writing is fantastic and I love the constantly changing tone of the narration. Atwood exposes the human character in such a raw and chaotic way that it is almost impossible not to be swept away by her work. An interesting piece of fiction that explores sexual and political power in a way that truly makes the reader think.
