A must read. I could not put the book down. One of the best reads of the year.
Fascinating, enlightening and easy to understand - Marton illustrates with ease the giant of modern global politics that is Angela Merkel.
I appreciated the book focused on her leadership, and politics and not on her personal life or issues as so many other biographies do. Regardless of there being little regarding Chancellor Merkel's personal life, it is easy for biographies to go down this route. Morton does an outstanding job in this book.

Portrayed Merkel in an extremely favorable light - at times I did wish for some more both sides-ism. But overall it did what I wanted it to do, which was teach me more about Merkel's background & political decisions
outstanding. I finished wishing we had a leader like this in my country, but grateful she was in power for so long.
An enjoyable book, but perhaps in an effort to appeal to a US audience, too much space was dedicated to the relationship with the US, comparing Germany to the US, disadvantaged Germans with disadvantaged Americans, and references to Donald Trump are sprinkled into places where it doesn't really add in anything to the argument. I felt the analysis of German domestic politics and players lacked depth by comparison, and there were times near the end where I was surprised, for example, to hear news of Merkel's mother. We had spent so long hearing about Donald Trump that I forgot we were supposed to be going through a definitive biography of Angela Merkel.
Bought the book and just didn't make the time to finish it. Carried it around in my purse for months on and off. It was really good so not sure why the procrastination.
Merkel is a modern day hero for me. Her ability to lead with her head and her heart and Not let emotions and political theater take center stage was undoubtedly the key to her success. Her scientific mind and curiosity were on equal footing with her ability to check her own ego at the door while Stoking the ego of those (men) she had to work with when it came to her superpowers. We can all learn from her incorporation of her humble upbringing in the East Germany with her desire to embrace new ideas from West Germany and find balance of holding on to both at the same time. Nothing she did was easy but she made it look so. I am in awe.

Obviously written to favour Merkel, but a fantastic read about one of the twenty first century’s greatest and most private leaders. It’s incredible so much information was put into the one book.
informative
inspiring
reflective
fast-paced

As I moved to Germany in 2010, Merkel has been Chancellor all this time, so I was familiar with most of what happened since then. The part about her early life and how she began in politics was interesting. That said, I found the book had little depth nor did it delve very deep into her life (understandable given that she is very private)
However the book didn’t really go very deep on politics either.
It was ok, especially for those not familiar with Merkel herself or European/Germany politics, otherwise it’s mostly a rehash of what is well-known about her. Ie. Putin bringing his dog to meeting, while knowing she has a fear of dogs, or Euro crisis, refugee crisis 2015, etc.
