A good, immersive psychological thriller, even if the romance part didn’t particularly convince me (I think that’s part of the point though). It’s all about the thrill of finding out what happened to Rebecca while living in her shadow. And then finding out what’s next when everyone knows what happened.
Even though I knew more or less where this was going, I was really hooked, and felt Rebecca all around. I felt very sorry for our main character, but couldn’t trust her judgement at the same time. I never knew what to believe and kept searching for clues, I really enjoyed the book (in a morbid way because being in the shadow of the ex is haunting). It’s all about doubt.
I loved the unreliable narrator, the fact that most of the book is rumors and deciding who gets believed, as well as the power of information. I also found it interesting how the book contrasts the “right” woman vs the “wrong” woman, and what each supposedly entails. Very interesting how it affects power dynamics with Mr. de Winter (Bluebeard in a weird way).

you’ve heard of the character being haunted by the narrative but this is the case of the character haunting the narrative. i tore through the back half of this book holy crap. what a smart story—the namelessness of the narrator, the freshness of the writing and language, wow.
