quick thoughts on this book: i can absolutely understand why this is a beloved classic, and everything that can be said about it has already been said is much greater detail.
rebecca is a masterclass in excellent character work, building tension, and beautiful writing. we begin as we end, at manderly and with our unnamed main character and her much older husband, maxim de winter. through her memories we learn about the turbulent journey that has led them both to an almost exile, far from their destroyed home.
usually characters like the new mrs. de winter annoy me - spineless and fickle. but it is impossible not to feel for her, not to recognise how utterly alone and young she is. is it any wonder that she clings so desparately to the first person who gives her ever a sliver of validation? maxim was her prince charming, even all the times he most definitely was not.
i loved mrs. danvers, even in all her hatred and cruelty. her love humanizes rebecca, who is made monstrous by almost everyone else. in the end it is through her hands (allegedly) that rebecca thruimphs, and i think that's beautiful.

I didn't really like it but loved the way it was written
I'm so behind on reviews here! My Goodreads status is 3 books behind :0
I read this because A. our book club at work is reading it and I thought why not B. It's a classic that I'd not only never read but that hadn't even been on my radar and C. it seems that every other reader I know whose read it has given it 4-5 stars. So I figured I'd better give it a try. I'm at 4.5 stars, I think.
I really enjoyed this book, but wasn't fully engaged during the first half. I think it's meant to be a slow build, very gothic and suspenseful, but I also didn't really like our (nameless, did you notice?) narrator until at least halfway through or more. She was just so ... weak. And I know that was part of her character and part of what changed as the story progressed, but it drove me crazy! I think I've watched too much Downton Abbey because I couldn't help thinking every time Mrs. Danvers did something awful that Carson and Mrs. Hughes would never exhibit or stand for that sort of behavior. Nor would a Crawley take it. Of course this woman isn't a Crawley and wasn't born into that life which is some of the point, to be fair. But about halfway through the book picked up for me, and I buzzed through the rest of it and was on the edge of my seat toward the end. I did see one of the earlier big twists coming, but not the ending. Love the last scene! Very atmospheric (as is the book as a whole). I'd recommend this book to those who like a build of suspense and the fun of just not knowing what's going on or where things are going and those who like gothic reads in general.
