Yet again Terry Pratchett leaves me speechless with his ability to turn tropes on their head and create characters that are not only realistic but I refuse to believe that Granny Weatherwax doesn't actually exist and isn't out there somewhere with her goats. This book plays with the idea that boys are wizards and girls are witches, challenging gender stereotypes but never feeling like some sort of heavy equality literature tomb, only a light hearted romp across a disc balanced on the backs of four elephants standing on the back of a turtle swimming through space. Also I loved how Esk felt like a nine year old, full of arrogance and impertinence.
Overall, as always, I think everyone needs to pick up a discworld book this instant and this one in particular if you like witches and girls who live in Bad Ass.

Esk is fated to be a wizard. There's only one problem: she's a girl.
Great fun with Granny Weatherwax and assorted other characters, plus a bit of Lovecraftian parody.

Really fun book, good place to start with Discworld since it starts off pretty self-contained. An exploration of gender roles and expectations draped in a fantasy dressing, great if you enjoyed Good Omens because they read very similarly
I have to be in a certain kind of mood (a the world sucks and i need some comforting satire mood specifically) to read Pratchett. April was a rough time and this book was a lovely read. A new favorite for sure!

'Tis funny.
'Magic has a habit of lying low, like a rake in the grass.'
"What's an Elephant?'
'A kind of badger,' said Granny. She hadn't maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.'
'They both savoured the strange warm glow of being much more ignorant than ordinary people, who were ignorant of only ordinary things.'
'- faces that not even a necrophile could love.'
