Good introduction into the topic in general. Also very effective in spreading awareness regarding the depth and reach of trauma on a societal level. Very thin regarding the healing part, here I was expecting more input. The book in general was a bit disappointing. It seemed done rather hastily with not much thought or editing, being redundant in a lot of passages and having two interview parts in the middle which I could've done without.

Only 3.5 as a lot of it I had already come across through work and felt that the reflective prompts weren't always applicable. Also set mostly in US so healthcare section wasn't as applicable but still relevant to UK.

This is hard to review for me. On the one hand, it's great - lots of insight on the topic of trauma. But on the other hand, I was very confused. Is it a scientific book or a self help book with lots of anecdotes? I found myself waiting to learn something that I can implement into my own life and it did come up every now and then, but I felt like the practical "antidotes" were too general and almost basic common sense. I don't really feel like I learned anything new - although this feeling makes me want to reread it and see if anything new enlightens me that I may have missed before. Also speaking of anecdotes, I felt some were pretty redundant. Overall I was left wanting something more in depth and illuminating.

If you picked up or started reading “The Body Keeps the Score” and lost interest or felt it was overwhelming, read this! This is an excellent explanation and exploration of a word that gets thrown around a lot in the mental health world. I appreciated how Dr. Conti explains the effects of trauma and models ways we can meet people precisely where they are at. At the same time, he doesn’t feed into a victim mentality and constantly holds hope for people to heal and grow.

this kind of reads like a half-podcast, half-guide. it's an easy and short read

i think it gives some pretty good advice and i like how there's reflections throughout the book

it focuses a lot on convincing you that trauma permeates our society and is detrimental to our well-being as a culture

i loved the lady gaga foreword LOL (mainly bc im a fan, not necessarily bc it was profound)

I enjoyed the examples of trauma and what can result from being exposed to it, as we all are. Also, very good thoughts on how to lessen the negative effects that trauma can have in ones psyche. Enjoyable and insightful read, even though I found some parts to be repetitive.

Ownership of trauma in society is so important, I really found the anecdotes of community in helping others with trauma to be insightful. We must collectively take ownership of trauma and the way that we address it, and treat it as the epidemic it is today.

Dr. Conti sounds like a wonderful physician, but I was hoping for something more in depth. The book skims the surface of trauma and I was losing interest towards the end.
