Not quite 5 stars but sooooooo close. This book was an absolute ride and I adored every moment. There was a bit of a lull in the middle and I got whiplash a few times with all the changes, but ultimately this was a fantastic examination of cult mentality, facism, radicalisation and deconstruction of dangerously right-wing views. Absolutely brilliant. Will be reading more of Emily Tesh's books for sure.

My brain ➡️ “idk what tf is going on but I LOVE IT”
Y’all get this book. It’s queer. It’s a SPACE OPERA. It’s violent. Some of the best sci fi I’ve read recently. What are you waiting for????
A few things - I think this book does an amazing job of worldbuilding. You are immediately dropped into an Earth type world but have no clue what is going on. And then you are just along for the ride as Tesh slowly feeds you bit after bit about what happened to Earth, who the aliens are, who the villains are. The twists and turns took me by complete surprise. I can't say more without spoiling but that first shift in the story I literally just put the book down and stared into space.
Now I loved Kyr. She is truly a horrible character in the beginning because she is brainwashed. BUT, as she learns, as she explores other people and experiences, as she starts to break away from being a cold robot, she becomes so much more. And she gets challenged in her shitty ways. I think Tesh did a great job of giving us a rough character who we ultimately know is terrible and has other characters tell her that she is terrible. It's not just shitty for the sake of shitty. And I loved Cleo. She was prob my favorite character in the entire book besides Yiso.
There's been a lot of talk about the whole hair part at the end. As a Black person, it didn't bother me. Does it make sense? No. But it didn't take away from the story for me.
It is also important to note that this is sometimes billed as a "sapphic space opera" and imo that is not correct. Queer? 100%. Sapphic? Not 100% clear. There is an inkling of sapphic romance. There is very much queer relationships. But it is not a romance book. Nor does it even have strong romantic elements.
Overall I fucking loved this.

Kyr is a teenager born to fight for humanity after Earth is destroyed by The Wisdom and she has the training scores to prove it. When she's assigned to the Nursery and sends her twin brother on a mission meant to kill him, she breaks the rules and goes after him. Venturing to a planet inhabited by "traitor" humans, Kyr begins to learn that maybe everything she's learned is not the whole truth.

Some Desperate Glory was one of my anticipated releases this year. This was a story I had trouble putting down: every time I thought I knew where the plot was going to go the story would veer off in a completely unexpected direction. While the plot choices were completely unexpected for me, and some of them could have used more development, most of them grew on me and I’m glad the plot followed the path it did. The world outside the society Kyr was brought up in has a lot of potential to be further explored, and my favorite parts of the novel were the ones when she wasn’t on Gaea Station (but, to be fair, I don’t enjoy reading about cults that much).
I was hoping this would be an outstanding read for me, but there were several things that prevented this novel from being 5 stars. First, I was rooting for Kyr’s society to implode from the first chapter and that satisfying payoff I was looking forward to didn’t really start to happen until the final part of the novel. Some readers might enjoy this build up, but for me the delay was disappointing. Without spoiling parts of the plot, I was hoping Kyr’s society would have greater chunks in its foundation chipped away with each of the novel’s parts. Second, Kyr was so unlikable to me for so much of the story. While she did end up growing on me, there was some explicit homophobia, transphobia, and racism expressed through her lens as the main character that I don’t think was ever properly addressed. I think you can share the nastiness of a cult society without the main character explicitly sharing and reinforcing its beliefs throughout the story. Finally, I felt this story didn’t end in quite the place it should have. There was one major part I felt was left unresolved, and even one more page of text could have wrapped things up in a way that was satisfactory for me.
While this novel didn’t quite meet what I hoped it would, I would be interested in trying more from this author in the future. Thank you again to the publisher for sending me a free ARC.

This whole book was a surprise 😭 I mean I had an idea I would like it, yes. But somehow I didn't know just how much it would affect me and throw me in a roller coaster through space.
I love the world-building and all the details the author put in this story. Those passages from books/journals/accounts about human race, the wars, even the insertion of philosophy and humanity? They all helped build and set the tone of the story, as well as the history and foundation.
I love the both the familiarity and surprise of the storytelling and the plot. Like it got me feeling I know what's going to happen next and that I've seen it before (naive soldier realizes how fucked up the system is and realizes not everything is what is seems). But then the author throws you into some sort of deep end and suddenly you're caught unawares. Several times I wanted to rip my hair out because of the plot twists and details, but oh I loved it.
And perhaps one of the best parts of the book is the main character herself, Kyr. She's so annoying. Well, I guess, not anymore. Because in those 400+ pages, she has annoyed me, frustrated me, confused me, made me sympathize with her, made me understand her, touched my heart, made me root for her. She made me love her. Kyr is such a complex and compelling character, and I just loved being on this journey with her.
Overall, Some Desperate Glory was an incredible and expansive book. If you give it a try you might like it too.
