Un'opera "tributo" che si compone di un memoir incompiuto (che copre il periodo dal 1936 al 1965) e di una raccolta di lettere scritte, prevalentemente, fra il 1944 e il 1965.
Se il memoir può rivestire un certo interesse per chi già conosca i racconti della Berlin e voglia individuare gli spunti autobiografici che li hanno ispirati, l'epistolario è davvero un riempitivo, un appendice del tutto priva di interesse.

Konečne som mala tú česť spoznať Luciu Berlin a verím tomu, že to nebolo naše posledné stretnutie, pretože autorka píše výborne a preto sa nečudujem, že je aj po smrti stále obľúbená.
Napriek tomu musím povedať, že mám z knihy veľmi zmiešané pocity. Totižto, je rozdelená na dve časti - v prvej Lucia píše o svojom živote od detstva, o miestach, kde vyrastala, o udalostiach v jej živote, ktoré ju nejako formovali a bolo to veľmi zaujímavé a naozaj skvelo napisané. Autorka mala totiž fascinujúci život. Žiaľ, nestihla to pred smrťou dokončiť.
Druhá časť knihy sú listy, ktoré napísala rôznym ľuďom. A tie ma akosi nezaujímali. Často mi tam chýbal kontext a boli, samozrejme, napísané iným spôsobom. Mňa nejako nikdy nezaujímala osobná korešpondencia iných ľudí, o to viac keď ide o osobu, ktorú som akurát spoznala a nemám k nej vytvorený nejaký bližší vzťah. Priznám sa, že tie som už potom len rýchlo preletela.
Knihu určite odporúčam, no v podstate len jej prvú časť.

Toto je vyslovene kniha len pre oddaných fanúšikov Lucie Berlin, skladá sa z jej krátkych autobiografických zápiskov o miestach, kde žila a listov, ktoré posielala svojím najbližším. Prvá časť bola celkom fajn, z pohľadu Európanky sa mi páčilo spoznávať s Luciou miesta USA a Mexika, ktoré zrejme nikdy nenavštívim. Problematická pre mňa bola druhá časť, ktorá je zbierkou listov. Bez kontextu a bez toho, aby ste dopodrobna poznali život a ľudí okolo Lucie Berlin, Vám tie listy veľa nedajú. Čo bol teda aj môj prípad.

I feel like if I had known about Lucia Berlin before reading this book that I would have maybe appreciated this more, I mean, when I started reading this, not really knowing anything about the author or her books, I didn’t know what to expect, and I personally found that I felt like I was reading not so much a memoir but a string of descriptions, young Lucia parting with her father and travelling around with her mother and her ‘not very interesting’ sister.
This is where I sort of struggled to maintain any personal connection with this autobiography, I feel like through those glances at young Lucia’s life and then reading those letters to her friends when she was far from home and struggling to find her feet as a writer, what stood out more was the descriptions! I feel like rather than describing everything she saw and what she and her young sons and husband were up to, it would’ve been more interesting to draw on those personal faces that she would have come across and what triggered her inspiration to write and why she wanted to write- but I felt like this book definitley got bogged down in being too descriptive and perhaps less personable.

Empecé “Manual para mujeres de la limpieza” y me estaba gustando TANTO que decidí pararlo y ponerme con “Bienvenida a casa” para saber más sobre la vida real de Lucia Berlin y comprobar cuánto de lo que hay en sus relatos corresponde a verdaderamente a su biografía.
El libro no es que sea malo: es que simplemente son apuntes, fotos y cartas de la autora, que pueden tener más o menos interés, y que funcionan como complemento a su obra. Veo este libro más como un anexo que podría ir en una edición aumentada de su obra más célebre que como un libro en sí. Por supuesto que en sus apuntes biográficos (breves descripciones de todos los sitios donde ha vivido) muestran la grandeza literaria de Lucia; claro que las cartas reflejan su humor, su brillantez, sus preocupaciones más ordinarias; desde luego que las fotografías que salpican este volumen (imágenes de viajes, de escenas de playa, de reuniones familiares, de jornadas en el campo...) son absolutamente hipnóticas, como un videoclip de Lana del Rey... Pero al final son solo eso, apuntes recopilados para crear un libro y venderlo al rebufo de un éxito editorial. Lucia, absolutamente milimétrica en la elaboración de sus relatos, perfeccionista como una cirujana de la palabra, no creo que estuviera muy contenta de que se firmara a su nombre una recopilación de bosquejos sobre su vida que es más material para fans que quieran saber más detalles sobre ella que algo con valor literario propio.
El libro no es que sea malo: es que simplemente son apuntes, fotos y cartas de la autora, que pueden tener más o menos interés, y que funcionan como complemento a su obra. Veo este libro más como un anexo que podría ir en una edición aumentada de su obra más célebre que como un libro en sí. Lo más bello de este libro son las fotografías. Es cierto que las cartas guardan mucho de su vida íntima, pero quizá no ameritaban su publicación. Personalmente, no me conmovieron y lo que quizá más me despertó del libro, porque mostraba un desafío tremendo para su vida y su escritura ( el consumo excesivo de drogas, incluyendo el alcohol de sus parejas y de ella ), es mencionado pero no se ahonda en ello. De todos modos es un libro interesante, pero no lo reelería. Y la traducción del español de España desmerece muchos pasajes.

Fascinating but frustrating since unfinished. I really wanted to hear about her Oakland time. This illuminates how non-fiction many of her stories actually are. Makes me want to re-read "Manual for Cleaning Women".
