All of Joan’s works get 5 stars from me. I’m fascinated by the way her brain works and so grateful we have her essays. In this book I specifically loved the piece titled “In the Islands”.

This might be my favorite Didion so far. As with any collection of stories/essays, some were stronger than others. I think they’re strongest towards the beginning.

joan didion seemed to be a fly on every important wall in 1960s/70s california. it was interesting to hear her perspective of many social and political happenings of the time, many of which still hold true today.

Joan Didion possesses both of the two elements essential to good essay writing: the curiosity of a child, and the writing skills to eloquently portray her observations that stem from that curiosity.

4/5. I’m excited for Slouching toward Bethlehem.
