ok wow. this book stressed me out. it was so so well written though. it’s about chronic illness, but especially the difficulties women with chronic pain have being taken seriously by medical professionals and people in their lives when their pain is “invisible.” it’s also about the complex social relationships and power dynamics between women. the story also heavily parallels and includes elements from the two plays frequently mentioned in the book; alls well that ends well and macbeth. i wish i’d read them more recently because i could tell there was so much i was missing thematically and symbolically. its KIND OF a revenge story? the narrator is a super complex character because you emphasize with her and feel for her but its hard because her narrative voice is just. so spiteful and hateful. sometimes it’s warranted but sometimes it’s not. and yet you still understand WHY she would think and feel that way. it’s morally very ambiguous i definitely want to read her other works but again this book was just so stressful and terrifying that i did Not enjoy most of it even tho i still super appreciated its craft. i know a ton of people have loved it though so id still recommend it!!
