It’s very, very well-written. Definitely not a book meant with readers like myself in mind when it comes to personal taste, but structurally it’s very sound and very intelligently done. The novel takes a while to attain true momentum, but when it does, tension is palpable in every chapter and moves the reader forward — at least, when the reader is not too emotionally affected to continue. Though I don’t fully understand their significance to the rest of the novel, I found myself moved by many depictions of the war. McEwan’s description of Briony’s strengths and weaknesses in writing may perhaps mirror his own as well — at the very least, I found myself paying close attention to his descriptions and use of imagery.

Not a genre I'd generally reach for, but beautifully written. The story weaves a tense and intricate path--really capturing a sense of self realization and reflection.

The assault and accusations  were too stressful for me and I ended up looking up the ending within the first 100 pages. Even knowing Briony manufactured the majority of the story and nothing could really be believed, I was so worried for the characters and curious to know how they'd get to their eventual ends.
