I felt very conflicted about this book nearly the whole way through but I do think, in the end, I liked it.
My initial thoughts about the writing was that the style felt like something I would have written when I was younger; the words sometimes feeling superfluous, the pacing a little strange. The book essentially fell into four parts:
1. A slow, descriptive, chapter by chapter introduction that led up to the pivotal crime that shapes the whole book.
2. The Dunkirk evacuation from Turner's perspective. Depressing, an interesting move from the very slow burning start.
3. Grown up Briony as a nurse, confronting her sister and Turner with the truth.
4. Briony as an old woman, leaving us to mull over some interesting realizations.
When I realized the book was essentially "written" by Briony, the book fell into place for me, a bit. The pacing, the focus of each part of the story, all made more sense.
It's a horrible, twisting sort of story that isn't enjoyable to read, because what is unfolding really is awful; then the ending, though not perfect, was good; was nice. It was wonderful to know love won out. And then... you are hit with part four. Dreadful part four that lets you know that the war actually claimed both the lovers, and there never was any atonement to be had.
"It was always an impossible task, and that was precisely the point. The attempt was all."
