Yeah, the first run of this team really doesn't measure up to the 2012 run. It was a lot less... fearless?

Aside from the issues I have with the only black guy being the one that needed super drugs to "be a hero", it just wasn't anywhere near as fun or engaging as the 2012 run. I used to commend this one for being the only one in which Billy and Tommy looked like twins but... honestly, everyone kind of looked the same? Save for Cap and Eli, I felt like Cassie and Kate both looked like they could have been related to Tommy and Billy. Their features were so similar.

I didn't love that it culminated in Eli's lie coming true. It felt like a "be careful what you wish for" thing. And I didn't realize until rereading but... this book never used the word gay? Billy accidentally comes out of the closet but they never actually have him say the word "gay". Contrasted with the 2012 run where we have America, a lesbian, David explicitly saying that he's "bi" and Billy and Teddy actually getting to kiss... this book seems like Marvel wouldn't allow anything but a vague hint at homosexuality. The most we get is Cassie calling Teddy Billy's boyfriend.

Anyway, I still like seeing where the team started. There are some great fight sequences. Children's Crusade, as a whole, is stronger than both of these volumes. It is interesting that this team only got 2 volumes, Children's Crusade and then a tie in book for the Civil War arc before they disappeared until 2012.

Though, I must say, the only thing this run had that I missed in 2012 was Cassie Lang. All in all, I enjoyed that run 10x more.

Definitely more character development. And they're doing some interesting things with, for example, having a young gay couple who aren't defined by that fact, Luke Cage commenting on how they don't have enough black superheroes, Kate having been raped but turning that around to make her stronger, etc. Could still do with a little less of the whole Avengers crew assembling for a giant fight thing, but I can't really read Marvel and complain about that.

Great follow up to the first volume that deepens the rest of the characters connections to the Marvel universe, cements friendships and alliances, and expands the team. My favorite parts: Kate shooting things, Wolverine sniffing bad guys, and Cassie casually growing to dangle baddies by their ankles. Super fun!

The art continues to be pretty objectifying for the girls and women, though, which I guess can go without saying, but I'm saying it because several times I was Very Uncomfortable.

Okay fine, I'm into Young Avengers now, and I'm going to drive the interlibrary loan office nuts by requesting everything they're in.

The series continues with another strong outing. Slightly less focused than its predecessor, this volume resolves the remaining hanging plot threads from the earlier volume. Not to mention Jim Cheung's art is fantastic. Although it is disappointing this series did not continue (until 2013... and what relation the 2005 and 2013 series have, I don't know) this volume wraps things up nicely. Young Avengers makes the case for the comic book origin story. This series never moves past origin but is phenomenally creative in how origin gets explored. It also manages to make the origin story expansive and compelling rather than perfunctory.
