A cozy sapphic mystery… set on Jupiter… with Gaslamp vibes? Honestly, the genre mashup here is super cool. The Mimicking of Known Successes delivers a quiet, reflective murder mystery with soft romantic tension and a side of climate-collapse world-building.

The relationship between Mossa and Pleiti was definitely the highlight for me. There’s this quiet ache between them, two people who clearly still care for each other but are dancing around their history. Their dynamic felt realistic and grounded in that intellectual, slightly aloof way that fits the story’s tone. I also really appreciated the subtle threads of climate change commentary and humanity’s longing for a ruined Earth.

That said, this is definitely a novella that asks for patience. It’s slow, meandering, and atmospheric; more about the vibes and the slow unraveling of relationships and mystery than fast-paced plot twists. I think I just wasn’t in the right headspace for something this introspective when I picked it up. I liked it, but it didn’t land as deeply as I wanted. The ideas are fascinating, but the shorter format means it can’t fully explore its themes the way a full-length novel could.

If you’re in the mood for a thoughtful, atmospheric, and low-stakes sci-fi mystery with sapphic romance, this is worth a read. Just don’t expect edge-of-your-seat thrills; it’s more of a literary slow burn with soft world-building and softer romance.

Enjoyable and a good break from a bad week at work.

While initially I only kept going with this book for Mossa and Pleiti (both of whom are likeable and enjoyable to read about) I’m very glad I did. The title came into play nicely with philosophy and slightly scared me about the future of the human race. I’ve never cared much for Earth - simply being the planet I was born on. But maybe I can understand a little about those who do now.
