It took me a while to get into this because of the tone which some other reviewers have described with words like "pompous". I initially thought it was bad writing, especially considering how often there was the sudden jarring of a word used wrongly.

I'm against the unnecessary use of long words and I think if you are going to use them you should at least Google what they mean, but in this case I ended up deciding that maybe it was Pleiti talking that way. As I got to know Pleiti I started enjoying the book. She was more of a stereotype than a real academic but still.

So then it was quite a lot of the things I like to read about- a mystery, with lesbian protagonists, a slow burn romance, academic setting, space/dystopian/environmental themes. I haven't decided yet whether I found the ending satisfactory or not but the book is genuinely original, the world building careful and now that I have got to know the characters they stopped annoying me so much (like real people I guess).

I don't know whether them being a relationship instead of "the yearn" will bore me...but Mossa will no doubt still be the mixof annoying and sweet and....in any case the next book in the series is worth me giving it a chance, especially when I start to crave mysteries.
