DID NOT FINISH: 44%

At first I thought I could power through, but the narrator wasn’t my favorite and it felt like the story wasn’t moving at all. I don’t know how to explain it other than the main characters felt kind of snobby and I just couldn’t find it in myself to like them

Make it Holmes and Watson but in space and make them lovers, oh, and make them women. This was so much fun!

Barely three stars for me. I think my difficulty with this one was that it couldn't decide what it was, so I didn't know how to approach it. I would have loved if it really committed to the idea that victorian notions of science and space turned out to be real, but it didn't. I would have loved it if the romance with a neurodivergent holmes-esqe character gave me some surprising insight into how a relationship like that could work, but it didn't. In the end I have to see it as a comforting homage to classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries where the reader isn't given enough info to solve the mystery but its fun to go along for the ride, and try not to be bothered by the ticks in the worldbuilding.

Great option of you love Sherlock Holms style mysteries.  This is NOT a retelling of them, but it has the vibes.  Even set in space, there is a decidedly Victorian London feel to the setting, especially with this narrator's voice.
As with Sherlock, the detective (Mosa) is focused on the job and not great at interacting with people.  The story begins in her voice, but quickly changes to her ex (the scholar) who is intelligent and better with people a la Watson.
I loved the world building and will be happy to get my hands on the next mystery staring these two both for the mystery and to follow the (re)development of thier relationship.
