Hmm. I really wanted to like this but had a hard time with it in the end. The ending fell flat for me and was quite confusing, and I don’t think the author really knew what this book wanted to say.
I also found the pacing of this book to be quite slow. The book shifts between past and present every chapter, so every time you get engaged in the plot, the book takes you back to something completely different, which made the book feel about twice as long. Also, timing?? We’d be in the present and the book would say “20 years later” or “5 years later” but still be in present day? So I couldn’t really figure out when this book is supposed to take place or how far apart the events were.

About 100 pages too long, with an abrupt, unfilling ending.
MPSRC - Book by a new to me author
2.5 Stars. This book was a little better than OK, but I can't go so far as to say I liked it. I liked parts of it. Actually, I probably liked the first 2/3 - 3/4 of it. I don't read much sci-fi, but I like to dabble in it now and then. I liked the premise of this book. But, much like me in high school, it didn't live up to its potential. I usually prefer character-driven books, but sometimes I am willing to forgo character development for a more complex plot and lots of action. This book had both, and it was entertaining for a while. The transitions between past and present were choppy. I often found myself skipping ahead in one world or the other because the shift had been too abrupt. Then it just took too long, and I was skipping ahead hoping to get to the end. It's not that nothing was happening. There was always plenty going on, but maybe with some better editing it would not have taken so long to get there.
None of these little problems took the book from a 3-star to a 2.5, but the ending did. The ending was a huge disappointment to me. I can suspend my disbelief all day long, but the ending went against the very "technology" that the entire story was based on. It felt contrived, or like he had written himself into a box and didn't know how to get out. He had set up too many complex rules to just ignore them at the end. For me, this was the story's ultimate failure and what kept me from liking the book.
In short, this one's a fun ride with a disappointing ending.

(and saying "oh, this works b/c MY flash is different than the other flash" without any additional explanation just didn't do it for me)In short, this one's a fun ride with a disappointing ending.
Really good! I enjoyed this so much. I got a little confused with the timelines while reading but pieced it together. The book gave me really crazy dreams tho!
An excellent story that takes a great look at how we adapt to new technologies. The structure of the story also is great as it jumps between perspectives with the beginning of this new technologies and how it's used years after.
4.25/5stars
this was REALLY fantastic! This was honestly what I was hoping from "Recursion" by Blake Crouch - it was so unique and fast-paced and interesting. I really love how well Charles Soule writes female characters (and all characters honestly) so respectfully and well. I also love how he makes such great social commentary while also being wicked entertaining.

Another fun sci-fi read. Loved the story. Would make an excellent movie.
It’s rare that I’ll dump a book but this one was just too annoying. I started hating it around the 28% mark and tried to stick it out in the hopes that it would get better because the “flash“ idea is really a very good one. But the storytelling was so irritating that I had to give up only slightly more than halfway through.
I hate it when an author abuses their protagonist in an attempt to create dramatic tension. (I hate it even more when the author is male and the protagonist is female, because I can’t help but wonder if he is the sort of person who believes that female life and suffering is a sort of disposable commodity but I TBH couldn’t remember the sex of the author when I decided to quit.) Eventually I was so sick of seeing the main character screwed over repeatedly that I no longer cared about hearing the rest of the story.

3.5 stars rounded down because I felt that the middle of the book dragged a bit compared to the beginning and the end. What a roller coaster, though!
