Gilly is a hard headed little brat focused on making things difficult for people around her but she soon realizes that life is actually hard, and what you want, may not be what you really need.

This is a children's book but it does not adhere to the traditional - 'And they all lived happily ever after..' - and that's one of the main reasons I like it. The characterization in too is done well and you can actually feel Gilly's anger at her circumstances through the writing.

Recommended reading for middle grade children

So glad Katherine Patterson could write such stories! Gilly is such a great character and seems so real in how she deals with her life situations. So much can be learned from each character and the way they interact with each other. Can’t believe so much can be packed in 90 pages.

Yet another children's book I have read this year that I enjoyed but would hesitate to suggest to many kids. Don't get me wrong I thought it was great; realistic, gritty, funny, and some great life lessons. However Gilly is a terrible racist, a character trait that would involve lots of discussion prior to the child reading the book and after. I never want to hide this kind of thing from a child, but it is something I would want to discuss in a constructive way.

So good. It still makes my eyes well up after all these years.

I just loved the main character and how she dealt with her problems. A very nice read!

Although I think this book was well written. I really did not enjoy the experience of reading it. I think it is so highly regarded simply because it was controversial for its time.

I couldn't tear myself away from this book. I don't know if children would like it, but I really did. I could feel Gilly's pain and understand why she wouldn't want to get close to anyone. I hated and loved the ending. No, it wasn't happy, but sometimes life stinks. It was highly unusual for a children's book to end that way, but I liked it. And I loved the characters, even the grandmother who only appeared briefly. Katherine Paterson seems to be able to give everyone strengths and weaknesses in a very short time. She's brilliant at that.

a tiny bit dated, yet the relationships and personal growth of Gilly transcends time

Darn you Paterson. Heartbreaking kid's books are a gift, I suppose.

I wrote my review on my blog and would like everyone to check it out!
