Read this in one sitting. It is harsh and powerful and hits in the viscera -- where good poetry always lands. Should be required reading for Americans.

This book looked cool and I liked the title.
but wouldn't memorize these like for a recital
looking for Bob Dylan and got Public Enemy.
while creative, it just didn't resonate with me

Stunning. A must for anyone who cares about race or America or — no, really just anyone who cares.

I don’t usually like persona poems but I loved this book — McCrae complicates race in a beautiful, dark, deeply sad way and his language is incredibly vivid.

A book that teaches me something always rates high. A book that delivers it in poetry? Even better.

I enjoyed going through these poems section by section and the voice and perspective shines here.

I also appreciated learning about Jim Limber - a historical figure that I was unaware of (and who I consider quite important).
