“I applied to be a giant dickbag first, but they told me you already filled the position.” - Chase Carter

This was a great read. I'm so glad the tiktok algorithm didn't let me down on this one. This book combines two of my favorite tropes, so I knew I couldn't be let down.

Chase is a smartass playboy who turns into a man that will make you melt. He works his way from being Bailey's enemy, to her friend, to her everything. He has no clue that a girl he met at a club will change his life in so many ways. He is so sweet and makes sure Bailey is comfortable with everything. He talks to her about her feelings, even if it does embarrass her. He is the King of Consent and has a dirty mouth, a wonderful combo if you ask me.

Bailey's life has just had a major change. She's a little lost when she meets Chase. He will work his way into her heart and make it a home. Bailey reminds me a lot of myself at that age, vulnerable, insecure, and inexperienced. I wish I had a guy like Chase in my life then, unfortunately I wasn't so lucky. I'm actually jealous of her.

This is my first read from Avery and I am planning on reading her other hockey series. I started reading this one on Kindle Unlimited, but I got about 4 or 5 chapters in and I bought it. I'm excited to continue the series.

Listen, I’ve been bedridden for days due to sickness and I desperately needed a distraction since OTC medication wasn’t working so I started going through my old KU holds. I don’t mind a sports romance which is probably why I originally picked this up but I’ve come to the conclusion that college romances are not my thing. If I have to read “that’s hot” one more time I may gouge out my own eyes.

A string of 'meh' reads combined with playoff hockey had me craving a hockey romance.

I really like Avery's work! I read Shutout first so I knew vaguely where this was going. That said, seeing Bailey and Chase's journeys was great. They really go through the wringer and come out stronger for it.

But I didn't love this as much as it's sequel because it's way too long. I was ready for it to be over 100 pages before it was. And that's not because it was unenjoyable! It just started to get bogged down in all the topics it tackled. Props to Avery for handling so many -- and in nontraditional ways, too -- but it was overkill.

Also, the writing is repetitive. It very clearly felt like this was a serial online story that she published. It's not bad but we don't need that level of repetition here. It irked me a bit.

If you want a heartfelt AND steamy college hockey romance, this series will definitely deliver!
