I didn't think Nabokov could make me hate him more after Lolita. Oh look, he did. I realise it's a memoir, but he's still ridiculously full of himself and unbelievably unaware of his privilege.

one of the best memoirs I have ever read.

This is the best written book that I have ever not enjoyed.

Nobody writes like Vladimir Nabokov.

4.0. This is an autobiography written like one of his novels, and if you’ve read his novels you’ll understand what you’re in for. This man is absolutely insane and this is probably the highest rating I’ll give to a book that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. However, the writing in this book is absolutely gorgeous at times, and it’s really hard to remember you’re reading an autobiography.

Side note: my professor for our class on Nabokov said about one of the passages in this book “you’d only understand this joke if you’re a professor of comparative literature” and I think that sums up Vladimir Nabokov’s style pretty well.
