I feel like 3 is a bit low for this book, for I found the beginning and some of the instances early on rather comical in nature and the ending was very sweet. If I could give an unusual rating, I would give it a 3.8--not quite 4. This is because although I loved revisiting Don and Rosie, I felt that it didn't pack the punch that the initial book did. There were times I was like yeah, yeah and it felt rather formulaic. I was looking for a "lighter read" and felt a wee bit cheated, because I became frustrated with the flow at times.
Overall, I felt satisfied in revisiting an unusual character and I didn't feel sad having read this novel, I just wish the middle at times wasn't so predictable. I see there is a 3rd novel following Don further and given I enjoy the character enough, I will be reading it. Seeing him with a child and interacting with fellow parents will be amusing to say the least. If you enjoyed the Rosie Project, I recommend reading this one as well.

Professor Don Tillman is terug, en hoe! Na het Rosie-project, waarin Don Tillman op geheel projectmatige wijze op zoek ging naar een vrouw- en die ook vond - is er nu het Rosie-effect. In deze sequel komen we opnieuw Don en Rosie tegen, inmiddels verhuisd naar New York en…. in blijde verwachting van een baby. Maar is het wel een "blijde" verwachting? Mama Rosie gaat op een heel emotionele manier met de zwangerschap om terwijl Don, tja… dit op zijn autistische bijzonder rationele wijze doet. En die twee manieren gaan niet altijd samen. Don leest alle vakliteratuur omtrent zwangerschap en bevallingen en slaat Rosie om de oren met allerlei technische details waar ze helemaal gek van wordt. Het "gestandaardiseerd maaltijdenplan" moet worden afgestemd op de specifieke behoeften van zwnagere vrouwen, wat niet noodzakelijk overeenstemt met de "goestingskes" van Rosie zelf. Om het moeilijker te maken komt Don's vriend Gene bij hen inwonen omdat hij bij zijn vrouw is buitengesmeten; loopt het tussen vrienden Dave en Sonia ook niet opperbest en komt Don ook nog eens in de problemen als verdachte pedofiel en terrorist.
Ik heb altijd schrik om sequels te lezen, zeker wanneer ik het eerste boek subliem vond. Bij dit boek was deze schrik duidelijk onterecht. Graeme Simsion weet opnieuw op boeiende wijze het verhaal van Don en Rosie te vertellen, beide kanten van het verhaal te belichten en komt met ronduit hilarische situaties en oplossingen voor de dag. Een boek dat je met de glimlach leest! En waarbij de herkenbaarheid van Don's gedragingen soms ietwat confronterend kunnen zijn ;-)

In ons appartement bestonden er negen mogelijke combinaties van ruimtes waarin Rosie en ik ons konden bevinden, waaronder zes combinaties waarbij we ons ieder in verschillende vertrekken bevonden" (p.8)
"in een sociale situatie zou ik de subtiele hint dat ik niet welkom was hebben opgepikt. Maar dit was wetenschap. Soms is het wel handig om immuun te zijn voor subtiliteit" (p.245)
"Ik ben me zeer bewust van mijn onvermogen om menselijke reacties te voorspellen. Maar ik durfde erom te wedden dat ik precies wist wat Rosie als eerste zou zeggen nadat ze het nieuws had gehoord. Ik kreeg gelijk, tot zes maal toe. "Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck' (p.49)
" "op de meest perfecte vrouw ter wereld". Ik had geluk dat mijn vader er niet bij was. 'Perfect' is absoluut en kent geen overtreffende trap, evenmin als 'uniek" of 'zwanger'. Mijn liefde voor Rosie was zo sterk dat het mijn brein had aangezet tot het maken van een grammaticale fout" (p. 193).
"Eén van de merkwaardigheden van dieren, ook van ons mensen, is dat we ongeveer een derde van ons leven slapend doorbrengen. Er bestaat geen praktische oplossing voor deze inefficiëntie" (p. 249).

Really more of a 3.5. Didn't like this one quite as much as The Rosie Project, but it was still entertaining. Listened to this one. Would recommend, but read The Rosie Project first.

More like 3.5. Definitely got better as the momentum picked up in the last third of the book.

I love Don.
I love the scientific rambles he tends to go on. This book was just as enjoyable as 'The Rosie Project' the only thing I didn't like was Rosie's character. She became likable the last ten pages but if it wasn't for Don's "weirdness" and his unbeknownst wittiness this book would be two stars.

Not quite as good as The Rosie Project. But I still laughed out loud in some spots.
Don is evolving and trying so hard to be empathetic and understanding. He's adapting to a new city, new people, new expectations. Unfortunately, everyone else around him is staying the same or even regressing.
I wanted to just throw the book at Rosie and tell her to knock it off.
No man, especially Don, can figure out what it is you want / need / feel if you don't tell him.
She really treated Don horribly throughout this book.
