A rather lovely little book with some well-drawn characters, major growth in the protagonist, and a rather too-pat, too-easy ending.

This has to be one of my favorite YA novels. It's one of the only books I loved in high school that's truly held up upon further rereads: one in college and one this past month. Every time, I've finished within 24 hours because the story is fast-paced, descriptive, and captivating.

It has just enough wonderful historical details that I get a great mental picture of the setting and time period without it being too much of a distraction from the story itself. Maud was incredibly relatable both as an adolescent and looking back at that age as an adult, and is one of the rare pre-teen/teen protagonists who never came off as annoying to me. A wonderful recommended read for anyone interested in Edwardian historical fiction and a little taste of spiritualism! Definitely will be purchasing a hardcover copy of this great story at some point.

It was an ok sort off book. That's all I've really got to say.

Elements of a gothic novel with an orphan being adopted by three elderly sisters and finds herself being a secret child and secrets and lies that could cost her her life.

It took me awhile to get into this, but after I did it was worth it. A tale of mystery and horror. Be aware that several of the main characters are involved in conducting fake seances. [Oct. 2008]

My friend recommended this book to me and I can see why it's her favourite book. It was very well written and it was an interesting read.
