This book was lovely. I KNEW what was going to happen in then end (it being a melodrama after all) and it still got me right in the gut. Great protagonist and wonderful horrible characters. Very well written.

Weird...just weird

It was an ok sort off book. That's all I've really got to say.

A melodrama is accurate. A really gothic tale for young adults. The cover is a bit clunky but the story is great. Was thoroughly entertained.

Wow. This is another book that I have been meaning to read for a while. I read the entire book in one sitting. It's rare that I read a book that makes me question my feelings toward the characters so frequently. Highly recommend.

I found this book pretty slow and anti-climactic. Although Maud was an amazing and entertaining character I had a hard time not losing interest in many parts of the story.

A young adult book which I loved. Great Victorian story of an orphan--but with a twist. The twist wasn't at all what I expected, which made me love it even more. The ending, while somewhat predictable was held out long enough that I almost though that the predictable thing wouldn't happen--another plus. Highly recommended.

From the first time I read this book over seven years ago (I can’t believe it’s been that long!) I’ve loved it. It captured my twelve year old heart and wouldn’t let go, I remember always rereading it. I’d never read a book like it before, and I honestly haven’t since— and I’ve read more books than I can count within seven years.

I don’t have any quarrels with this book, the story runs smoothly, and even if there are gaps within time, these are handled well. Schlitz knows when to let the reader fill in the blanks, and when to fill in the blanks herself. She also knows when to pack a punch with her descriptive writing! I couldn’t appreciate that when I was younger, but now? Now I do, and can’t help but marvel in awe and wonder at her descriptions. The characters (especially the main character) are written realistically, and I can see why I went back to this book over and over, the grown ups in Maud’s life were very similar to the ones in mine. They range from loving to utterly distant and uncaring, except for two. Those characters warmed my heart, and when I reread this book, I loved how well their characters were written, even if the story was just about Maud. They were completely fleshed out, with lives before our main character (which you don’t see a lot in media) and it really helps drive the story home.

Now, even though I dreaded finishing this book, the ending has to be my favorite part, the tears I cried over it while rereading this book were well earned. I would definitely recommend this for any reader of any age group! The historical writing is splendid, well written, and transports you into a different time. I’m definitely going to pick this one up again!
