This was good!! A good debut novel!
I cannot say I enjoyed it as much as Saving Francesca, also from Melina Marchetta, but I think it was good nonetheless.
I have some things I want to mention:
1st, Jacob and Josie. They are the most tender and pure thing I’ve ever read. They come off as real teenagers, full-fledge teenagers that we hardly ever see in other YAs.
2nd Jacob. Beautiful child, you broke my heart. How can a paper and ink person make you feel so much sadness and helplessness. I know you are not real, but I do wish I could have had helped you.
3rd Michael. You sir, I loved you! And your relationship with Josie. Brilliant!
The three main themes on the book might be: finding yourself and self-growth, family and culture, friends and love.
Josie was such a flawed being. In the best way possible, just how humans are. Such a teenager....
Good. This book was good!
Can’t wait to read more of Marchetta’s

a comforting and characteristically adolescent read.
Josephine Alibrandi is a charming and quick witted 17 year old girl in her final year of school. This is the year she meets her father, finds herself butting heads with the snobby girls at school and falls in love.
What an incredible journey this was. Marchettas strengths lie in writing flawed yet likeable multi dimensional characters we can relate to and empathise with. This story was filled with a lot of heart and at times emotional. Overall absolutely beautiful.

I love this book. It's far from perfect and not on the level of The Lumatere Chronicles, but it captures growing up in a minority culture so well and all the struggles that go along with it, the frustration and the fierce pride. I love Jose so much-- I love that she's stubborn and rebellious and religious and willing to wait for love. I love her grandmother and her mother and I love the relationships she has with them. The family relationships in this novel are spot on, as are the relationships between different social classes and ethnic groups and people of the opposite gender.
Melina Marchetta knows what it's like to be human. There is not a doubt in my mind that she is one of the best authors alive today, and certainly the best YA author. She deserves so much more publicity and praise than she gets. She's incredible.
A strong 4.5 stars.

Wooooow that was some really weak writing and I felt no connection or attachment to any of the characters.
