Not holding my attention. Trying to get the playfulness of Zorro with some serious stuff and it wasn't landing for me.

I have mixed feelings about this book.

Though there is a lot of info dumping in the beginning, there was also the quick introduction to our masked protagonist that got me really revved up from the get-go. Unfortunately as more characters were introduced, a LOT of other plot lines were introduced as well. With all these additions came a lot MORE world building and by the end of it, I was so lost in the web that I didn't really know who/what to root for.

The setting and the culture was beautifully set, but (and as a plot girlie, I can't believe I'm saying this) there was too much (uneccessary?) plot and not enough character development which made the romance suffer. Though I prefer a romantic subplot, I wanted more to convince we they were meant to get together at the end. It kind of simmered at the beginning, lost its way in the middle and then spontaneously crashed into each other at the end. This might also have suffered due to the young tone of voice. This is an adult novel, yet the narration felt juvenile.

All of this back and forth created a whiplash sensation of pace which also took me out the story. I'm debating if I want to continue with the series because I can see so much potential of each storyline getting tied up nicely at the end. I appreciate the themes of rebellion and the political intrigue but I don't think I formed enough of a bond with any of the characters to follow through.
