Hello Mum is a nice, short introduction to Bernadine Evaristo’s work, but I felt like it could have definitely been a lot better. I really didn’t enjoy how the main character was written and it felt really stereotypical, like the ‘average’ bad boy. I listened to this as an audiobook and although I loved how the narrator spoke the lines, I had to put it on 2.0x just to get through it.

This book is very different then all the other books I’ve read and the books I usually choose to read. It started off a bit random, I couldn’t quite place my finger on how I thought it would end and if I even wanted to continue reading. Yet I couldn’t stop. I don’t know what kept me reading, but I didn’t want to put it down. The ending absolutely destroyed me and I immediately broke into tears, this book got me deep into thoughts. I absolutely love this book, it was easy to read and didn’t pull out for too long. I recommend this book to everyone!!

Evaristo has sketched out, not drawn a portrait of a 14 year old boy in a world that judges him for the colour of his skin. A pacy and near thrilling stab of teenage rage and repressed anxiety that needed more fleshing out and colour blocking.
