Honestly, I went into this book with low expectations because I haven't heard the greatest things about this installment to the Grishaverse. However, I actually really loved this book--definitely not as much as Six of Crows but definitely a lot more than Shadow and Bone. I will say that it took a while for the story to get going and there really could have been at least 100 pages that could've been cut out. I do also agree that not much happened plot-wise in this book, but this story really shines in its character development. Zoya and Isaak entirely have my heart, I loved Nina's story, and I can see so much potential in the next book for me to love Nikolai's story.
Zoya was such an interesting character in the original trilogy but was obviously sidelined for the bigger story, so it was definitely exciting to have her as an MC in this book. I never would have guessed that the most emotionally jarring part of this book would be Zoya's backstory. It was so heart-wrenching, it added so much to her character, and made me fall in love with her. I did enjoy the tension between her and Nikolai but I'm glad it wasn't explored too much more in this one and was more focused on their personal journeys. I also did not expect that one of my favorite characters would be a side character that was first introduced in this book. It was so refreshing to see the POV of a normal person in a story filled with these supernaturally strong and powerful characters and how they try to survive.
I did not love the big reveal at the end,
the Darkling coming back to life
, because I feel like it was cheesy cop-out to create a villain for the story. I feel like the political issues that Nikolai was facing was more than enough for a plot, but I can see how that's not nearly as exciting. However I am looking forward to seeing more of these characters and how they finally find peace for themselves and Ravka.

Leigh Bardugo never fails to make a whirlwind story full of tangible, flawed, and lovable characters. This book was entertaining and paid tribute to a lot of characters from her other series, which can be sweet at times. However, I think the plot relied too heavily on her other books at times. The book would have benefited from some of it's own conflicts rather than conflicts that have carried on from past books/charcters.
