My first read of the year was chosen by my boyfriend - he’s a big fan of Philip K Dick and this is his favourite one so I was curious to see what it was like! I’ve only ever read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by this author.

🧊 How on earth to describe this book? Glen Runciter, the head of a “prudence organisation” that protects individuals and businesses from those with “psionic” (i.e. psychic) powers, is dead. He was killed in an explosion orchestrated by a rival - or was he? His employees keep receiving strange messages from him, and the world around them is warping and regressing. What happened to him - and what’s happening to them? Do they have time to figure it out?

I don’t read a lot of sci fi, maybe because I have some unfair preconceptions of the genre that make me reluctant. I don’t have a lot of patience for really detailed world building is part of it - but reading this it seems like Dick agrees with me. He doesn’t give you a long explanation; he throws his reader in at the deep end and lets you figure out what’s happening on your own. Ubik is essentially a mystery, and though the first half moves a lot slower than the second, it’s writing like this that keeps you engaged and curious while it’s revving up to the bigger stuff.

Written in 1969 and set in a wildly futuristic 1992, it’s an interesting read from the vantage point of 2021. It’s a very 60s futurism where the future seems defined by consumer goods and complex mechanical improvements to our lives - very different to the frictionless, screen-based notions we have of the future now. It doesn’t matter though; the ideas were fascinating and it does what I really love when I do read sci fi: giving you a world you could never imagine, zooming in on a detail you would never have thought about, to create a story that’s intriguing and expansive.
