3.99 AVERAGE

This started off as a 3 star book, sort of average/generic. But then... Rose got really snarky and the interactions between everyone got wilder and wilder. I loved it!

Wonderful set of side stories to the Incryptid novels. Really enjoyed getting to know Rose and the stories of the ghosts and Twilight world.

I really love that this is a collection of ghost stories about a character who is a ghost.  Really an incredible format, and I'm sorry the sequels will not be using it.

oh man, i nearly forgot to review this in the flood of shadowhunter academy stories i listened to

bad miss, no biscuit. don't prioritize reviewing trash books over good ones :l

so this is a set of ghost stories about rose marshall, the phantom prom date (you know the story; girl hitchhiking from the side of the road, you give her a ride and later discover the girl you saw died years ago). they get a little repetitive -- you can tell they were initially released as serials -- but pretty solid nonethless. i did not get a strong sense of voice off rose marshall but remained interested anyways which is unusual for me as i'm a heavily character based reader

I loved the world-building of this setting, and the palpable underlying mysteriousness and darkness. I was pleasantly surprised by how distinctly American (USAmerican) this felt, something that I didn't know I'd been searching for. This is more a collection of related short stories tied together by the main character, an it focused on traveling across vast distances via highways, often in the middle of nowhere, and places like diners, cornfields, and truck stops. Anyone who has road tripped across the US would recognize these places, as well as the slightly grimy, suspect, melancholy feel that they can sometimes have, especially at night.

If you ever told ghost stories around a campfire, you've heard some variation of this one. That combined with the intriguing blurb for this caught my attention. I expected something a bit creepy and possibly some action. I didn't find much of either, but that's on me and my own assumptions. On the whole, the book is well written and the author is certainly talented, but I found myself struggling to get through the book. What started as a seemingly great premise ended up being what was more like a series of not so scary ghost stories told from the ghosts point of view. We do have the underlying plot line of this man that is forever hunting Rose, but he's only mentioned here and there through a tangle of seemingly disjointed tales with little in common other than Rose. Some of these stories were interesting, some not so much, which led to a lengthy, drawn out read. I did keep at it to see where things would go and that underlying plot did finally bear some fruit, but it was a rather disappointing conclusion. There were also several unfamiliar words used throughout the book - some easier to figure out than others - and I was surprised to find a glossary of sorts to explain those words. Sadly, it was at the end of the book. Since I don't read the back of the book first, I wasn't aware of this, but it would've been nice to know as I was actually reading the story. So, while the idea was terrific, the end result was just okay for me and certainly wasn't enough for me to read further into the series.
