Another great adventure with Maggie and Kai, I flew through this story as well, but more of a quest than the mystery that the first one had. Super sad that this ends on a cliffhanger and that there will likely be no more of this series 😭

I liked this one better than first one. It was a little more cohesive and MUCH warmer, with stronger friendship and developing found family vibes. The main character's development over the two books taken in whole is excellent and I still love her dearly. The locusts and cult thing were VERY creepy, and will feed my nightmares for awhile. There were still some narrative and motivational leaps that I did not understand and some unanswered questions, but there were some things that happened in this novel that helped bolster some of the same from the first novel, so maybe more answers will come in the next one?? Fingers crossed!!

This series is slowly becoming one of my favorites. Action packed but doesn't neglect character development. Cool post-apocalyptic world building and non-European fantasy creatures? Women playing the broken brooding hero that's usually reserved for a dude with a trenchcoat? Secondary characters with hidden depths and an angry cat lady? YES PLEASE!
