Adichie’s writing is beautiful. Their descriptions of Kambili’s world are vivid and poetic, pulling the reader deep into the story. The narrative follows themes of religion, political corruption, colonialism, family, and true wealth instead of money. The book had beautiful prose and was full of surprises both sweet and sickening. I was sad when it ended.

A really interesting and well written slice of life novel about an extended family in Nigeria, and how the conflicts, both within the family and in the country as a whole, impact their lives. Especially shows that family and love are the true wealth, but when the very infrastructure of your country is falling apart, even that may not be enough to stay together.

Despite how dark things may seem, it ends with clarity and hope of healing.

Good writing, but hard to like. Even thought I read it fast, I still wanted to put it away. You want and don't want to be there

I didn't really know what to expect coming in except something good (because Adichie). It exceeded those expectations. It's ultimately a story about family and what it means to connect to other people, or have those connections withheld. Strong CW for domestic violence, its a big theme in this book. I love how fleshed out all the kids are - from Jaja to Amaka to Obiora. And also the exploration of other themes, such as what it means to believe in God while there is so much dark history & oppression tied to it.
