The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes.  3 out of 5 stars.  I borrowed this book from my local library

This book was well written and had not grammatical errors.  The plot was a little bit more tense than the first two and seemed more urgent than the first two.

Why it only got 3 stars:  I have struggled so much with this series.  It is so hard to like the characters.  I get it that they are mostly just teenagers, but their interactions with each other are rather shallow and sometimes cliche.  I did like the ending.  That finally did make me like the characters.  I do not think it was a waste of my time to read this book, nor was it difficult.  However, I will not be rereading nor buying for my library.

Recommend for 14+.  Good book overall.

p253: uh huh, well i did wonder
p291: surely not…
p323: hmm, well this is a tricky situation
p329: i’m desperately trying to work out what even is the best outcome now that

quotes

"Yes, you do. And it doesn't even matter, because I'm not putting on a show here, Heiress. I'm not playing at being overprotective or pretending that, for once in my life, I want to do the right thing. I love you. I would die to protect you. I would make you hate me to keep you safe because damn it, Avery—some things are too precious to gamble. This is who I want to be, for you."

"You make me see myself as a person who's capable of anything. I would jump out of a plane with you, snowboard down the side of a volcano with you, bet everything that I have on you—on us, against the world. You don't get to run off and take risks and expect me to stay behind in a gilded cage of your making. That isn't who you are, and it's not what I want. You, have always made me bold. You're the one who pushes me out of my comfort zone. You don't get to box me back in now."

~1st Reread~
Well, I guess I was wrong.  This book was SO MUCH BETTER upon rereading.  It's a five-star book now.  My heart wasn't set on things being a certain way.  I knew what to expect.  I saw all the little things I'd been missing before.  As a result, I saw just how amazing and absolutely genius the finale of this trilogy really is.  I'm so glad I decided to reread this series before the release of The Grandest Game.

~Original Review~
This book warrants a well-earned 4.25 Stars! For the first half of the book, I wasn't loving it nearly as much as the others in this series. It's kind of hard to pinpoint the all-encompassing reason why that was. The mystery itself was great. The story was intriguing. There were some really great moments in this book (some involving the romance). The only things I can really point to for sure were a couple of the characters. Grayson was a lot different from what he was like in the other two novels. The given explanation for this made sense to me (his past), but he started out as being very unlikable. I also did not like a certain newly introduced character at first. She came off as annoying and childish to me at first. She was like this for a little over half the book. Then the plot really kicked in. I can't say much without risking spoilers, but I was left very content with the ending this book gave, and with the characters of both Grayson and our new arrival. If you aren't loving the book at first, trust me--- it gets better.

A note on the romance in this novel. The beginning of this book changed my outlook on Grayson. Yes, he is still one of my favorite characters in the book.  I'm just not sure I'll ever truly forgive Grayson for how... different... he was during the first half of this book. Jameson has slowly grown on me as a character as I've read this series similar to how Warner from Shatter Me is growing on me.

I applaude Ms. Barnes for how she concluded this novel--- not just in terms of the romance, but also in terms of the story and the character development. This is NOT a Fantasy series. I am NOT usually a fan of that which is not Sci-Fi or Fantasy. That changed with these novels. The Inheritance Games is a new favorite of mine. I will be rereading it in the future. I will think about it often. It has earned its place on my bookshelf. And, I am SO excited to preorder and eventually read The Brothers Hawthorne next August. This Tiktok-famous series deserves its praise. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone and everyone who loves YA and wants a fun read.

A great conclusion to the inheritance games trilogy. The twists the turns were so amazing and unexpected
the fact that Toby’s daughter betrayed Toby and Avery and helped kidnap him
such a great read, even though I’m not sure how the next two books go in the series I can’t wait to read them

A satisfying ending to the Inheritance Games trilogy. Or is it? The end resolved the first three books but left the door open for other books to follow possibly.

At first I was overwhelmed with all the numerous details I just couldn't remember from the previous books, but soon I caught up with everything and became so invested in the story. I just had to read the final 200 pages in one sitting. What a way to wrap the trilogy – a cliffhanger – sure there's got to be a sequel or a brand new series? I'm so excited already!

Things I didn't like or care about: Avery's love life and the love triangle between her and two brothers. no thanks. Also the very existence of Eve as a character felt a bit unnecessary and complicated things for no reason.

But damn do I love treasure hunts.
