As an otherwise 'gifted' kid who struggled with reading & felt it was a chore, I remember I did not put this book down. I loved the characters, the riddles, the twists. I remember being so incredibly moved by this book. As an adult, I now know I missed most of the deeper social commentary of the book at the time. I hope to re-head & read the sequel.

A classic! I was introduced to this book in sixth grade by the most amazing teacher, and he read us a chapter or three a day. Pretty much all of us liked it, and I had to go out and get the book myself. The movie was actually a pretty good adaptation, but hey, the book is the book. Always a good read.

I really enjoyed this book about a middle-schooler who is wrongly accused of stealing a pair of (smelly) sneakers belonging to a baseball legend and is then sent to a boys' detention camp to dig holes all day under the Texas sun. Stanley Yelnats is a fantastic protagonist, and I appreciate the slow growth in his character--and courage--he experiences while at Camp Greenlake. The other stories woven in with Stanley's are also marvelous and clever, and the entire book feels like a quirky folktale come to life. I highly recommend this book, especially if you've seen the movie; while I haven't watched the adaptation in a long time, the book has some depth and elements that I prefer over what I remember of the film.

Regarding the quality of the audiobook, I'd have to rate it at about two stars (if that). The reader is rather awful and annoying, so this is one audiobook to not take with you for a long car ride.

Reread for school. Just as enjoyable as the first time. This is such a well-crafted story. It has been fun watching the kiddos put the pieces of both story arcs together.

I read this book to my 3rd graders who LOVED IT. My normally hard-to-quiet-down class was absolutely silent during my read aloud times during the day while I was reading this book. (Except for the perfectly timed *gasps* when they found out some twist in the story). Even knowing the story myself, I found myself reading another chapter even though we didn’t have the time and had to do other things. Such a fun ride for kids and adults
